Maren and Jack are forty-three days into their marriage. The table has just come through the doorway. Lunch is almost ready. Her mother is on the way.

“With what I actually put in?”
The extra mustard becomes part of what is saved.

“When I’ve done the water.”
Her mother hands it back without folding it.

“I like having something left.”
The number changes. The reason does not need to be kept.
