AFTER DESIRE / What Governs Desire
Notice the distance between appetite, promise, consequence, and another person’s will. Which one becomes harder to see when the desire is strong?
If useful, name one desire plainly and one boundary it must answer to. Let neither statement cancel the other.
AFTER RECOGNITION / The Need to Be Seen
Notice when attention from strangers outweighs the knowledge of people who have actually witnessed your life.
If useful, tell one person how their voice has remained with you. Do not require their approval to make the gratitude true.
AFTER BELONGING / Who Is Ours?
Notice whether the standard changes when the person is an ally, an opponent, or someone with no useful label at all.
If useful, apply one criticism you make of an opposing group to the group you call your own.
AFTER POWER / The Shape of Power
Notice the point where help becomes a favor, pressure, preference, or repayment.
If useful, ask whether the outcome you want could become a fair standard for everyone affected by the rule.
AFTER MASCULINITY / What Are Men For?
Notice when protection makes someone safer and when it risks making that person smaller. Notice when steadiness becomes silence.
If useful, name one need before it becomes anger, distance, or a burden someone else has to discover.
AFTER AMBITION / The Uses of Ambition
Notice the unfinished thing that follows you into a room where your body is present and your attention is not.
If useful, choose one ordinary stopping point and keep it—not because the work is unworthy, but because something else is worthy too.
AFTER GRIEF / What Grief Cannot Finish
Notice the difference between repair death has made impossible and return that is still available now.
If useful, make one small return while the conversation is still yours to continue.
AFTER FAITH / Among Lesser Gods
Notice what governs your mood, your attention, and your sense of innocence: work, politics, approval, congregation, winning, or something else.
If useful, choose one next act ordered by love rather than by the need to make the story end cleanly.
AFTER BECOMING / What We Are Permitted to Become
Notice when insight begins to feel like transformation, or when a good explanation starts asking to be treated as exoneration.
If useful, name the next responsible act without deciding in advance what another person must feel, offer, or forgive.
